Tow Center for Digital Journalism

Klaudia Jaźwińska is a journalist and researcher at the Tow Center for Digital Journalism at Columbia University, where she leads the Platforms and Publishers project. With Aisvarya Chandrasekar she tested eight AI search tools on news citations and found that, together, they answered more than 60% of queries incorrectly.

Testing AI Search at the Tow Center

"Publishers are kind of in a bind because if you want to opt out of AI Overviews, you opt out of Google Search entirely," Jaźwińska told NPR in July 2025. "News content is of great demand by AI companies, and that won't go away."

For AI Search Has a Citation Problem, published in the Columbia Journalism Review in March 2025, she and Chandrasekar ran 1,600 queries built from excerpts of articles by 20 publishers. Perplexity answered 37% of them incorrectly and Grok 3 answered 94% incorrectly, and premium chatbots gave more confidently wrong answers than their free versions.

Several of the tools retrieved content from publishers that had blocked their crawlers, and some fabricated links or cited syndicated copies in place of the original articles. Licensing deals with the AI companies did not guarantee accurate citation.

Agents, Accuracy, and Prediction Markets

Her Tow Center work for CJR has continued into 2026. With Chandrasekar she examined why readers keep asking AI about the news while knowing the answers are imperfect, and whether publishers can reclaim control as AI agents arrive in news.

In April 2026 she wrote on her own about Polymarket and Kalshi signing deals with news publishers, and what those ties could mean for how prediction markets are regulated.

From Lehigh to the Marshall Scholarship

Jaźwińska is a first-generation graduate of Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and also an alumna of Cardiff University and the London School of Economics. She is a Marshall Scholar and a FASPE Journalism Fellow.

From 2021 to 2023 she was a research fellow at Princeton's Center for Information Technology Policy. From 2022 to 2023 she was also technical coordinator at the Digital Witness Lab, where she built the data labeling process for WhatsApp Watch, a platform that helps journalists track disinformation in the Global South. She joined the Tow Center in January 2024.
