Rand Fishkin

Cofounder and CEO

SparkToro

Rand Fishkin is cofounder and CEO of SparkToro, the audience research company he started after seventeen years building Moz. He remains one of search marketing's most public educators, now arguing that zero-click and AI answers make brand and audience work more important than chasing blue links alone.

Founding SEOmoz

Fishkin dropped out of the University of Washington around 2000 to work in web design, then found himself and his mother deep in company debt. In 2003 he started the SEOmoz blog as a way to attract clients and teach what he was learning about search. The blog became a consulting practice, then in 2007 a software company that raised funding and made him CEO.

Over the next decade Moz grew into a major SEO software brand with more than two hundred employees at peak scale, tens of millions in revenue, and tens of millions of annual visitors to its content. Fishkin became widely known as the Wizard of Moz through Whiteboard Friday videos, conference keynotes, and research that challenged Google's opacity, including work later cited by major newspapers and U.S. regulators. Domain Authority, Moz's machine-learned ranking likelihood score, became a widely used industry metric. He stepped down as CEO in 2014 during a public battle with depression, stayed as an individual contributor until 2018, and left the board in 2020. Private equity later bought the company; he wrote about that ending in The final chapter of my first startup.

Lost and Founder and SparkToro

In 2018 he published Lost and Founder with Penguin / Random House, a blunt field guide to startup life that criticized venture incentives he no longer wanted to optimize for. The same year he cofounded SparkToro with Casey Henry as an audience intelligence product for marketers, PR teams, and founders who needed better research than expensive surveys or manual scraping.

SparkToro was built as a deliberate contrast to the Moz growth story: an LLC rather than a classic venture C-corp, founder-controlled, without traditional VC, and with twenty-five to thirty hour workweeks as policy under values the team shorthand as BELUX. The product helps teams find where their audiences already gather online so messaging and media buying can follow real attention rather than guessed keywords alone.

Zero-Click Search and AI Answers

As Google's results pages filled with features that answer questions without a click, Fishkin became one of the clearest public voices documenting zero-click search and what it means for brands. He later co-authored Zero Click Marketing with Amanda Natividad, extending that argument into practical brand and audience work when the click is no longer the only success metric.

He applies the same argument to generative answers: when ChatGPT, Perplexity, and AI Overviews summarize a market, the brands that already earn mentions across the places audiences trust are the ones models can repeat. He also co-led, with Patrick O'Donnell of Gumshoe.ai, a volunteer study showing how inconsistently AI systems recommend the same brands across identical prompts.

Snackbar Studio and Alertmouse

Using SparkToro's structure he later funded Snackbar Studio, an indie game project that returned to a childhood interest, and in 2026 launched Alertmouse as a Google Alerts alternative after years of frustration with broken monitoring tools. He still keynotes on marketing, technology, and entrepreneurship worldwide, and his research has been cited by outlets including the Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, and The Economist.

He is married to author Geraldine DeRuiter; he has joked that he is best known as her amateur-chef husband.
