Accounting Advice for Freelancers
Burton studied accounting at the University of Florida and became a partner of Burton & Co., a public accounting firm based in South Florida and New York.
Much of his public advice has been aimed at freelancers and small business owners. In 2016 he launched Visor Vision, a project offering free customized tax tips for freelancers and millennials, and in a LinkedIn post on 1099 forms he reminded freelancers that "a freelancer is a business too," so they may need to issue the forms themselves when they subcontract work. CNBC quoted him in a 2017 piece on year-end tax moves for entrepreneurs, suggesting that owners who had underpaid estimated taxes ask their payroll provider to cover the gap: "You can go to the payroll provider, have them deduct the $10,000 and pay it to the IRS as additional withholding."
Founding Maverick Advisors
Burton also founded Maverick Advisors, an outsourced finance and accounting firm for growing businesses. Its about page says he has more than 15 years in public accounting, corporate finance, and advisory work, including roles as a global controller and CFO for mid-market companies and building finance departments from scratch. When he is not working inside a client's finance team, it says, he builds internal AI agents and tools for the practice, with the goal of faster closes and cleaner books.
